Holy Week Timeline

This timeline gives a very basic account of what was taking place during Holy Week. Other sources may slightly vary some of the timings, but this timeline has a helpful list of actual events during this period.

You will see parallel passage references from more than one Gospel for some of the happenings. Try reading any one of them, for a start. Then, if you wish to go deeper, prayerfully read another parallel account.

Wednesday

The Bible says nothing about Wednesday. He probably remained in Bethany (just outside Jerusalem and where they were staying for the Festival) with his disciples, or may have visited the temple again.

(Another source for this day suggests reading about Jesus’ being anointed with precious ointment against His burial. Mark 13:3-9.)

Thursday - Maundy Thursday

Matthew 26:20-35, Mark 14:17-26, Luke 22:14-30

Jesus speaks to the disciples in the Upper Room

John 13:1-17:26

Friday - Good Friday

Saturday

Nothing happens.

(One source mentions this may when Jesus went to Hades and led captivity captive. 1 Peter 3:18-20. But many are not willing to state this timing firmly.) We do know that this was a sad day for His disciples.)

Sunday - Resurrection Day - Easter Day

Hymns:

Jesus Christ is Risen Today

Christ the Lord is Risen Today

The Strife is O'er, the Battle Won

Jesus rises from the dead. Hallelujah!

Matthew 28:1-20, Mark 16:1-8, Luke 24:1-53, John 20:1-21:25
