The most important part of the Christian year

Yes, even more important - indeed, for more important - than the December celebration of Christmas which, sadly, more people seek to celebrate than the events surrounding our Lord's death and resurrection.

And yet those happenings which we think about this month (our Lord's triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the day we call Palm Sunday, His celebrations with His disciples of the Passover in the upper room when He instituted the Lord's Supper on the day we call Maundy Thursday, the various trials which culminated in His death upon the Cross on the day we call Good Friday, and His glorious victory over sin, death and the grave on the day we call Resurrection or Easter Sunday) brought about the need for Christmas!

So we celebrate Palm Sunday with those in the crowds who welcomed Jesus as He travelled on the colt on His way into the city and the children whose praise echoed round the walls of the Temple before we think about the celebration which still brings much joy through remembrance for every religious Jew as the twelve joined Jesus for the Passover meal before He introduced His disciples to a new, but more imporant "Passover" when our Saviour's blood, as the perfect "Lamb of God", was soon to be shed as the life-giving gift for everyone who believes in Him.

Then, of course, we journey on throught the night of Maundy Thursday into Good Friday as we thin of our Lord's arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane before the various illegal trials which took place through the night and into the next day before Jesus was finally crucified on the Cross as He bore "the sins of many" including ours.

And so, we come to His resurrection on Easter Day with all its wonderful celebrations of the victory He won for everyone who has believed in Him and who "should not perish but have everlasting life"!

BUT, we cannot really celebrate our Lord's resurrection unless we accept the need for His crucifixion and the redemption from sin which He offers to everyone of His human creation if only each one believes in Jesus as "the way, the truth and the life" - the life which He freely grants to those who accept Him!
